All supermarkets need to start charging for plastic bags, say 25c per plastic bag. That will give people an incentive to use the re-usable ones provided. I am shocked at how plastic bags are handed out at the supermarkets and packed with sometimes only 1 or 2 items in them. The money earned from charging for these plastic bags can then be used for setting up recycling programs on island.
Here in Canada, they charge 0.05 cents per plastic bag used.
Before this, we had a recycling container at the front of the store as you walked in, so that people can bring back their plastic bags and re-use them.
Either method would be an improvement.
As for the re-usable bags. Perhaps, a company in Cayman would have a day and "give away" the bags for free?
We also have re-usable plastic bins (think like a recycling bin which fits in your shopping cart) that have straps so you can carry them on your shoulder if you don't have a cart. Easy to wash out and durable.

ReplyDeleteSure, as long as the re-useable ones are for free.
